3rd Annual Great Southern Tailgate Cook-off

Bring your appetite to Main Beach Park on Amelia Island on August 24 and 25. Here you’ll enjoy live music by local and regional bands while experiencing the thrill of the barbeque competition…and learn some barbeque tricks to show off at your own tailgate parties.

 

This free event is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event and Florida State Championship contest. The cost per amateur team to participate is $100 (chicken and ribs) and $250 for each professional team (chicken, ribs, pork butts and brisket). The professional teams will compete for over $20,000 in cash and prizes, with the Grand Champion in the professional division qualifying for the American Royal Cook-Off, as well as the Jack Daniels Championship. 

 

Entertainment Schedule

On Friday, August 24 the gates open at 3 pm. From 5:30-7 pm-Jimmy Parrish and the Ocean Waves perform. From 7:30-9 pm - Rockit Fly

 

On Saturday, August 25 the gates open at 10:00 am. From 1-2 pm -Beech Street Blues Band; from 2:30-3:30 pm - the Honey Badgers ; 4-5 pm - Sean McCarthy & the Fishin' Musicians; At 5 pm is the Awards Ceremony; from 7-8:30 pm - Little River Band

All of this occurs on Amelia Island, a barrier island rich in history and breath-taking natural beauty. It’s Northeast Florida’s coastal treasure with  long, beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife, and pristine waters.

Food and beverages are available for purchase inside the gates. Outside food and beverage not permitted. No pets, please. Parking is $5 per vehicle with shuttle to event (available from Atlantic Elementary School to Main Beach 30 minutes prior to event opening. The Museum of Science & History (The MOSH)
 Jacksonville

Since the Museum of Science & History opened its doors in 1948, space science education has been a top priority. In November 2010, MOSH unveiled a completely renovated Alexander Brest Space Theater (with a 60-foot dome and seating for 200 where you can explore far-off galaxies) A new Konica Minolta Super MediaGlobe II in the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium gives maximum viewing pleasure. Or you might visit the Florida Naturalist’s Center, which houses their collection of live northeastern Florida animals, or stroll back through 12,000 years of northeast Florida history.

Do touch is the rule at this playground for the mind. Daily science shows, live animal shows, planetarium programs and a children’s area ensure there is always something to stimulate the mind and awaken the imagination for guests of all ages.
Interactive Exhibitions:

Enter The Body Within through a larger-than-life mouth and stroll down the digestive tract. At Water Worlds explore their permanent aquarium exhibit, where many fascinating water habitats and live aquatic animals found throughout Florida and beyond are represented.

In Currents of Time you can walk through the history of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida from earliest settlers over 12,000 years ago to modern-day events. Along Atlantic Tails you’ll meet Fermata, their life-sized right whale, along with her baby plus other marine mammals as well real-life marine skeletons. At JEA Aqua Expo you’ll learn how water works.

The Loft Gallery houses artifacts from MOSH’s history collection as well as objects on loan. At the Florida Naturalist’s Center you’ll meet resident live animals native to Florida: Owls, snakes, turtles, tortoises, and alligators, etc. with the opossums a visitor favorite.

Skies Over Jacksonville – 2 pm daily; Astronaut–Fri & Sat at 5 pm; The Zula Patrol: Down to Earth - Mon- Sat at 11 am; Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure – Mon-Sat at 3 pm. Sesame Street's One World, One Sky-Sun at 1 pm; Dynamic Earth-Mon-Sat at 1 & 4 pm, and Sun at 4 pm.

The Museum of Science & History (the MOSH) is located at 1025 Museum Circle in Jacksonville. Hours are Mon-Thur (10 am-5 pm);  Fri (10am-8pm); Sat (10 am-6 pm); and Sun (noon-5pm). Admission is $10-adults; and $8-seniors, military and children 3-12. Fridays are special: museum admission is $5. Plus Cosmic Concert laser light shows  occur at 5, 6, 7 and 8 pm ($5 per person per show; laser glasses cost $1.) A MOSH pass includes general admission plus access to certain programs.
